[OSEN=인천공항, 박상현 기자] 한국 축구대표팀. 비록 16강은 떨어졌지만 이미 독일에서부터 귀국할 때까지 그들은 영웅이었다.
귀국길에 오르기 위해 25일(한국시간) 새벽 독일 프랑크푸르트 국제공항에 나타난 태극전사들의 모습은 그리 밝지 않았다.
그러나 대표팀이 공항 카운터에서 하나하나 수속을 하자 아르헨티나와 멕시코의 경기를 시청하고 있던 공항 내 모든 사람과 직원들은 열심히 싸워준 태극전사들에게 박수를 보내며 환호하기 시작했다.
공항의 한 직원은 "한국이 스위스와 아깝게 진 경기를 봤다"며 "주심이 편파판정을 했는지 아닌지는 축구를 잘 몰라서 모르겠지만 친구들의 말을 들어보면 제프 블래터 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 회장이 스위스인이기 때문에 한국이 희생양이 됐다고 한다"고 말하기도 했다.
항공기에 오른 태극전사들은 같은 비행기에 탄 승객들과 사진을 찍고 사인을 해주며 점점 희색을 되찾기 시작했고 기장이 "태극전사들 수고하셨다. 그동안 당신들이 있었기에 우리가 하나됨을 다시 느꼈다"며 격려의 멘트를 보냈을 때는 모든 승객들이 대표팀의 선전에 박수를 보냈다.
11시간 여의 긴 여정을 마치고 난 뒤 태극전사들이 비행기에서 내리자 인천국제공항은 그야말로 '난리'가 났다. 태극전사들이 하나하나 비행기에서 나오자 공항 보안요원 뿐만 아니라 스튜디어스까지 몰려들어 사인과 사진 공세를 벌였고 환호와 박수는 공항 검색대까지 이어졌다.
입국심사대에서 "조재진을 찍지 못해 아쉽다"고 말한 한 여학생에게 16강 떨어졌는데도 축하를 하느냐고 슬쩍 던진 질문에 "그게 무슨 상관인가요. 열심히 싸웠고 훌륭한 경기를 펼쳤으니 충분히 환호할 만하죠"라며 살짝 눈을 흘기며 답변했다.
태극전사들이 짐을 찾고 입국장으로 모습을 드러낸 순간 카메라의 플래시 세례와 대표팀 선수들의 귀국을 축하하는 축구팬, 아니 국민들의 박수와 환호가 이어졌다. 3연패로 16강에서 탈락한 뒤 입국 때 야유를 들었다는 코스타리카와는 분명 다른 모습이었다. 비행기에서 내릴 때부터 입국장까지 태극전사들의 귀국을 축하하는 사람들은 어림잡아 3000여 명.
열심히 싸워준 23명의 태극전사와 딕 아드보카트 감독 이하 코칭스태프, 그리고 대표팀을 물심양면으로 지원해준 스태프 모두 이미 우리 마음 속의 영웅이 되어 있었다.
