강물이 불었을 때 떠내려 온 포탄이 강가 여기저기에 널브러져 있다.

강원도 연천군 한탄강 상류 바위 틈에 형체가 비교적 온전한 포탄이 위험스럽게 끼어 있다. 방치된 채 많은 시간이 흐른듯 포탄이 주변에 있는 바위처럼 보인다.

한탄강가 바위 위에 걸쳐있는 포탄 뒤로 산호수중 환경구조대원들이 강 상류지역을 돌며 포탄을 찾는 작업을 하고 있다.

한 환경구조대원이 강가에 묻혀있는 포탄을 발견, 조심스럽게 자갈과 흙을 걷어내고 있다. 한탄강에는 이처럼 자갈에 덮여 보이지 않는 포탄이 많을 것으로 추정된다.

포탄은 한탄강 물 속 곳곳에서도 발견된다. 수심 2m 지점에서 발견한 포탄은 이끼가 가득 낀채 심하게 부식돼 있었다.

| | 깎아지른 듯한 절벽과 수려한 협곡으로 천혜의 자연을 자랑하는 한탄강. 겉모습은 평온하고 아름답지만 그 속에 온갖 종류의 포탄이 계곡과 수중에 널브러져 있다면 과연 믿을 수 있겠는가. 강원도 평강군에서 발원한 한탄강은 그 길이만 해도 136㎞. 그 중 포천시 관인면 중리에서 연천군 연천읍 고문리까지 약 15㎞ 구간에서 포탄이 많이 발견된다는 제보를 받고 지난 13일 수중환경 보호단체인 산호수중 환경구조대원들과 함께 한탄강 상류지역을 탐색했다. 이 구간은 국내 최대 규모의 다락대 야포사격장이 있어 탄착점을 벗어난 오발탄이 집중호우때 강으로 떠내려오는 곳이기도 하다. 고무 보트를 이용해 강을 타고 내려가면서 육상과 수중을 살펴보았다. 보트를 타고 강을 따라 내려간 지 20분도 채 지나지 않아 제보대로 강가에서 포탄이 발견되기 시작했다. 포탄은 강을 따라 계곡 양쪽 군데군데 박혀 있었다. 멀리서 보아도 포탄임을 한 눈에 알아볼 수 있을 정도로 길이가 긴 것도 있었다. 보트에서 내려 강을 따라 걷자 바위틈에 끼여있어 쉽게 보이지 않던 어른 손바닥만한 포탄까지 보였다. 강가에 있는 포탄 대부분은 녹이 심하게 슬어 검붉은 색을 띠고 있고 노출된 뇌관 주위로 자갈이 촘촘히 박혀 있었다. 포탄은 계곡과 바위틈에만 있는 것이 아니었다. 유속이 비교적 느린 물속에도 여지없이 포탄이 박혀 있었다. 물속에 있는 포탄은 강가에 있는 것보다 부식이 더 심했다. 이날 강을 따라 내려가면서 눈으로 확인한 포탄의 수만해도 수십발이었다. 탐색에 참여했던 산호수중 환경구조대 윤상필 대표는 “자갈에 덮여 드러나지 않는 것과 물속에 있어 보이지 않는 포탄까지 15t 트럭 몇 대의 양은 될 것 같다”며 “문제는 포탄의 수가 아니라 불발탄이 섞여 있을 가능성이다”라고 말했다. 경기 북부지역의 젖줄인 만큼 맑게 보존되어야 할 한탄강. 하지만 한탄강에는 언제 터질지도 모르는 포탄까지 잘 보존되고 있었다. 〈한탄강|사진·글 정지윤기자〉 - 대한민국 새신문! 경향신문, 구독신청( http://smile.khan.co.kr) - | |
