경북 성주군이 2003년부터 사용할 폐기물 종합처리장 후보지를 인접 고령군과 가까운 수륜면 작은리로 정하자 인근 고령지역 주민들이 상수원이오염된다며 반발하고 있다.
성주군은 현재 사용중인 성주읍 삼산리 매립장의 사용기한이 2002년말로 완료됨에 따라 최근 작은리 일대 1만8730㎡를 새 후보지로 확정, 60억원을 들여 조성공사에 착수할 계획이다.
그러나 고령지역 주민들은 작은리가 고령쪽 주민들의 상수원인 대가천에서 불과 16㎞ 떨어져 있어 처리장 침출수가 상수원을 오염시킬 우려가 높다는 이유로 이의 철회를 요구하고 나섰다.
고령군의회와 사회단체, 주민 대표 등은 ‘성주 폐기물처리장 설치 반대추진위원회’를 최근 구성하고 “성주군이 상수도 취수원과 가까운 곳에 쓰레기매립장을 조성하는 것은 우리지역 주민들의 정서를 전혀 고려하지 않은 처사로 절대 반대한다”고 주장했다.
이와 관련, 성주군 관계자는 “처리장이 완공되면 침출수 수집조를 만들어 전량 정화처리하기 때문에 상수원을 오염시킨다는 고령지역 주민들의 주장은 잘못된것”이라고 말했다.
