완벽한 원전 강독 능력은 학문의 기초… 쉼없이 매진해야

어려서 절에 다녀오실 때 마다 어머니가 들려준 법문은 어린 내게 스펀지처럼 스며들었다. 독서광이던 큰언니를 따라 책을 읽던 10살, 괴도 루팡을 읽던 때였다. 탐정이 옛 성안 20여개의 방을 돌아다니는 부분에서 방 하나를 묘사하기를 ‘옥좌가 2개, 왕과 왕비가 있었을 법한…’이라고 쓰인 그 한 줄에 나는 큰 충격을 받았다. ‘나보다 책상이 더 오래 남겠구나’하는 생각에 멍했다. 정신을 추리고 바라본 창밖에는 무슨 일이 있었냐는 듯 햇빛이 찬란히 비추고 있었다. 그때부터 내 고민은 시작됐다. ‘내가 죽더라도 나는 세상을 다녀갈 뿐’이라는 고독과 불안감에 나는 미칠 지경이었다. 혼자만 끙끙 앓으며 고민하기가 얼마였을까? “태어났다면 죽지를 말던가, 죽는다면 다시 태어나지를 말던가”하며 어린 시절 나를 괴롭히던 고민은 후일 알고 보니 원효가 사복(蛇腹)에게 했던 말이었다.

# 부친 권유로 법학과 진학해
10살부터 생사의 고민에 진한 홍역을 치뤘던 나는 중학교 진학 전 훌륭한 사람에 대해 나름의 정의를 내리는 것으로 고민을 멈췄다. 그때까지 부모님과 학교에서 (출세해서) 훌륭한 사람 되라 들은 것을 나는 ‘후회 없이 죽을 수 있는 사람이 훌륭한 사람’이라고 나름의 결론을 내린 터였다. 고등학교 3학년이 됐을 때 공민(정치경제) 과목 선생님에게 슈팽글러와 토인비에 대해 들었다. 철학과나 사학과에 진학하고 싶었다. 그런 내게 아버지는 고시패스 하기를 강요했고, 부친의 권유에 못 이겨 결국 고대 법학과에 진학했다. 법학 공부를 하는 동안 재미도 없었고 왜 다니나 싶었지만, 이상하게도 졸업은 수석으로 했다. 부친의 기대도 커졌다. 하지만 법학에 흥미가 없던 나는, 계속해서 고시패스를 바라던 부친의 기대를 뒤로 하고 대학 졸업 후 8년 반을 집에서 식모살이했다.

# 엄하고 철저했던 모친에게 삶 배워
내가 식모살이 한 것은 어머니 때문이었다. 내 위로 두 언니를 모두 시집보낸 어머니는 당신 도리는 다했다며, 이제 당신 취미를 즐기며 살아야겠다고 집안일을 놓고 자수를 했다. 내 어머니 故 신주련 보살은 경북 군위에서 일본에 건너가 기예전문학교를 나온 인재다. 어머니가 작고했던 2006년 생전의 자수 작품을 모아 유작전을 열 정도로 자수에 출중했다. 원망도 많았지만 나는 내 어머니를 존경한다. 군위 고향마을에 아버지 호를 딴 ‘남강대교’를 놓은 것도 어머니였고, 학교법인 남강학원 인수에 결정적 역할을 한 것도 어머니였다. 또 가진 돈을 모두 희사해 우이동 보광사 불사를 이룬 것도 어머니였다. 남들이 쉽게 못할 수많은 일을 하고도 상을 안내던 순수하신 분, 호랑어멈으로 불리던 꼬장꼬장한 분으로 돌이켜보면 보통 분은 아니었다. 이런 어머니의 영향을 받아서일까? 주위사람들은 연구에 몰두해 글자 하나하나 완벽을 기하는 내 성격이 어머니 밑에서 시집살이 한 덕분 아니겠냐는 농담을 한다. 무엇보다 네 명의 아들과 부친까지 오부자의 뒤치다꺼리를 하며 8년 넘게 젊은 시절을 보냈던 내가 그나마 고려대 철학과에 진학해 불교 공부를 할 수 있었던 것 또한 부친의 반대를 무마한 모친 덕이었다.

# <금강삼매경론> 강의에 가슴 확 트여
그렇게 식모 살던 때, 대학 졸업한지는 2년 지났을 때다. 부처님 오신날 기념법회가 명동 시공관에서 열렸다. 황산덕 박사, 이항령 박사와 대각사에 주석하던 능가 스님, 당시 승려였던 고은 시인 등이 법문을 했다. 법문을 듣다 매료돼 조계사청년회 활동을 하게 됐고, 당시 광덕 스님 법문에 불교 공부를 해야겠다는 발심이 섰다. 이기영 박사, 이종익 박사 등 당대 석학들의 강의도 들었다. <노자> <장자>를 읽으며 시원하다 느꼈는데 이기영 박사로부터 <금강삼매경론>에 대해 들으니 가슴이 확 트이는 듯 했던 것을 보면 불교와 특히 원효와 인연이 깊었나보다. 법문을 들으니 부처님 말씀과 평소 내 생각이 다르지 않았다는 것에 환희를 느끼고 동국대 불교학과 대학원으로 진학하고자 했다. 하지만 부친의 반대와 모친의 중재로 고려대 철학과 대학원에 진학했다.

#늦깎이 대학원생, 한학만은 열심히 해
1969년 31살 나이에 대학원에 입학했다. 석사과정 지도교수는 김동화 박사였다. 내게 큰 감화를 준 <금강삼매경론>을 주제로 논문을 쓰려했지만 자료가 없어 <대승기신론>으로 대신했다. 논문마감기한 1달여를 앞두고 김동화 박사를 찾았더니 “간도 크다. 해볼 테면 해봐라”고 해서 열심히 썼다. 석사학위를 받고 나니 계속 공부 해야겠다 싶어 박사과정에 진학했다. 시간강사만 서너 학교를 다녔다. 논문 쓸 시간도 없이 강의만으로도 바빴지만 민족문화추진회(이하 민추) 연구원 생활을 하며 한학 경전 읽기에 몰두했다.
대학원 진학을 위해 지곡서당(현 태동고전연구소)에서 한문 공부 했던 인연으로, 민추에서 상임연구원까지 지내며 당대 최고 한학자던 우인 조규철 선생으로부터 한학을 익혔다. 당시 민추는 어려서부터 한문만 보던 사람들이 대부분으로 실력자들이 많았다. 매달 시험을 봐서 장학금도 줬는데 나는 1등을 놓친 적이 없었다. 이런 나를 두고 우인 선생은 “은정희는 꽤가 조조”라며 칭찬했다. 반면에 많은 한학자들 앞에서 “은정희가 1등인 것은 민추의 수치”라고 한 적도 있었다. 그때 김철희 선생 등 한학대가들이 내 고향을 물었다. 경북 군위라 대답하자, 경북에서 유명한 한학자 은진사와 어떤 관계인지를 물었고, 직계 증조부 된다 하니, “당연히 민추 1등을 할만하다”고 한 기억이 난다.
한문의 벽만 뚫으면 박사논문은 쉽게 써지겠거니 했다. 하지만 쉽지 않았다. 한여름 섭씨 35도를 넘는 더위에 보리밥을 도시락에 담아 점심과 저녁 나눠 먹으며 쉬지 않고 공부했다. 1번 읽어 모르면 2번, 3번 읽었다. ‘독서백편의자현’(讀書百遍意自見: 백 번 읽으면 글의 뜻이 저절로 드러난다)이라 했던가. 읽다보면 신기하게도 모르는 것도 알아졌다.
김동화 박사 작고 후 박사과정 지도교수는 윤사순 교수였다. 지도교수의 소개로 열음사에서 의뢰했던 <대승기신론소·별기(大乘起信論疏·別記)>를 번역할 수 있었다. 2000년에는 <금강삼매경론(金剛三昧經論)>과 그동안 난해하기로 이름난 <이장의(二障義)>를 번역해 행원문화상도 받았다.

#불교 학자는 원문에 자신 있어야
올해 고희가 되지만 지금도 나는 한문 읽기를 쉬지 않는다. 이강수 교수(연세대 철학과), 신용호 명예교수(공주대), 허경일 명예교수(덕성여대) 등 40년 강독지기 들이 모여 <춘추좌씨전>을 갖고 1982년 새로 시작했던 강독 모임은 지금도 격주로 토요일 마다 열린다. 고형의 <주역>, 조초기의 <장자천주>과 <시경> <서경>을 마치고 지금은 <예기>를 읽는다. <예기>를 모두 마치면 <사기열전>을 읽을 요량이다. 화요일에는 대학원 강의를 하고, 수요일에는 <논어> 강독을 한다. 금요일에는 유식 관련서적을 강독한다. 3월부터는 <구사론>도 새로 읽을 예정이다. 내가 적지 않은 나이임에도 거의 매일 책에서 손을 놓지 않는 것은 오랜 시절 함께 수학한 도반과 제자들 때문이기도 하지만, 무엇보다 학문은 손에서 놓으면 잊기 때문이다. 특히 한문은 어학이라 더 그렇다. 한번 봤던 책들도 매번 볼 때마다 새롭고 느낌이 다르다. 출간 후 15쇄를 넘긴 <대승기신론소ㆍ별기>도 아직까지 간간이 고칠 곳이 보인다. 여러 본을 대조하며 공부해 보니 원효의 <능가경> 번역은 범어 문법에 한자만 옮긴 것으로 오류가 보였다. 반면에 현장 역은 문법까지 중국식이라 오류가 적다. 천재며 성자라고 일컫는 원효의 번역에도 오류가 있는데 하물며 나와 같은 범부는 오죽 했을까?
하지만 요즘 학자들을 보면 너무 쉽게 논문을 쓰고 원전을 우습게 본다. 웃을지 감사해야 할지 모를 일이 있다. 고영섭 교수(동국대)가 그의 글에서 내가 <대승기신론소ㆍ별기> 등을 번역한 이후 <대승기신론>에 관한 연구자가 크게 늘었다고 한 것이다.
불교를 제대로 연구하려면 원전을 제대로 볼 수 있는 능력을 길러야 한다. 그것이 한문이든, 범어 혹은 빨리어든 말이다. 그런 점에서 나는 <니까야> 번역에 매진하는 전재성 박사와 <구사론>을 완벽에 가깝게 번역한 권오민 교수(경상대)에게 찬사를 보낸다. 원전을 확실히 볼 수 있는 것은 학문의 기초를 다지는 것과 같다. 원전에 대한 이해가 따르지 못하는 학문은 사상누각과 진배없다. 불교 원전을 제대로 번역하기 위해 다수로 구성된 팀이 필요하다고 본다. 한문과 불교 지식에 능한 젊은 사람 여럿이 모여 절차탁마한다면 얼마나 좋을까.
불교와 인연이 가볍지 않았던지 어머니 따라 해인사를 찾았다가 성철 스님에게서 책을 받으며, 또 조계사 일주문 앞에서 만난 인홍 스님에게 이끌려 석남사에 갔다가 출가할 뻔도 했다. 여태껏 내가 홀로 사는 재가자로 남은 변명은, 불교가 내 삶이자 철학이었고 생활 목표였기 때문이다. 매순간 내게 원효는 화두였고 번역은 수행이었다. 지금도 나는 학문과 둘이 아닌 내 삶을 위해 쉼 없이 조용동시(照用同時:본성의 비춤과 본성의 작용을 동시에 이룸)를 실천한다. 끝.

은정희 교수는 1939년 경북 군위 출생. 1960년 고려대 법학과 졸업. 1983년 고려대 철학과에서 ‘기신론 소ㆍ별기에 나타난 원효의 일심사상’으로 박사학위를 취득했다. 1984년부터 2004년까지 서울교대 윤리교육과 교수를 역임했다. 김미영 교수(서울시립대), 김원명 박사(한국외대 강사), 유호선 박사, 김영욱ㆍ한명숙(가산불교문화연구원) 등 다수의 제자들이 학계 및 교육계에서 활발히 활동 중이다.

40여년간 이어진 고려대 등산모임인 안암산우회 활동은 물론 동네 동사무소 단전호흡 강좌까지도 거르지 않는 그녀의 성실함은 부주열반(不住涅槃)의 원동력이 돼 원효 연구와 한문 경전 번역에 평생을 매진케 했다. 역서로 <대승기신론소·별기> <금강삼매경론> <연산군일기> 등이 있고, 논문으로는 ‘원효의 삼세ㆍ아라야식설의 창안’ 등이 있다. 올해 4월 26일 (가칭)<알기 쉽게 풀어쓴 대승기신론>을 출간을 더불어 고희 기념 출판 기념회를 가질 예정이다.
