[인터뷰] 정옥자 국사편찬위원장
“한국 뿌리 바로 알리겠다”
국사 자료 DB화 인터넷 보급 등 대중화 최선
현대 지식인 실천력 부족… 옛 선비정신 배워야

“오늘날 한국의 지식인들에게 가장 중요한 건 선비정신을 배우는 것이지요.”

규장각 첫 여성 관장을 지내고, 1948년 국사관으로 출범한 국사편찬위원회(국편)의 60년 역사상 첫 여성위원장으로 취임한 정옥자(66·사진) 위원장은 “사회가 어지러울 때 위험을 감수하고 선비들이 활약했던 것처럼, 오늘날의 지식인들도 한국사회에 문제점을 짚고 솔선해서 방향을 제시해야 한다”고 했다.

이처럼 선비정신의 부활을 강조한 그는 “세계화 시대는 오히려 국사교육의 중요성이 더욱 높아지는 시대이기 때문에 역사의 대중화에 가장 공을 들이겠다”고 취임에 대한 각오를 밝혔다.

춘천 출신인 그는 “첫 여성위원장이라는 타이틀 때문에, 역할모델을 잘해야겠다는 생각이 든다”고 했다.

정 위원장에게 춘천은 마음의 고향이기도 하지만, 그 옛날 전쟁의 아픔이 함께 묻어나는 곳이기도 하다. 그가 9살 되던 해, 6·25 전쟁이 터졌다. 그리고 전쟁 통에 아버지와 세 여동생을 모두 잃었다.

“쌕쌕이(일명 제트기)와 콩 볶는 소리에 귀를 막았던 것이 엊그제 같아요. 전쟁은 무슨 일이 있어도 막아야 합니다. 그래서 전 ‘평화사관’을 강조합니다.”

정 위원장은 “19C부터 전세계가 군사정치, 제국주의화 돼 국가와 국가간 투쟁의 논리로만 펼쳐져 왔다”며 “앞으로는 평화시대의 도래와 함께 경제문화의 시대가 열릴 것이며 우리나라가 그 중심에 있을 수 있다”고 전망했다. 우리나라는 침략과 약탈을 하지 않은 민족이었기 때문에 충분히 가능성이 있는데다 우리는 문화 르네상스를 경험했기 때문이라는 것. 그는 경제문화시대의 선두주자가 되기 위해서는 그 옛날 ‘역사’속에 그 ‘해답’이 있다고 했다.

“임진왜란과 병자호란을 겪은 후 상처받은 국민적 자부심이 회복되는 시기가 바로 조선후기입니다. 중국에 조공을 바쳤다고 알고 있지만, 사실 우리는 공무역을 한 것이었어요. 그리고 조선 고유의 문화를 꽃피웠습니다. 우리가 문화의 중심이라는 ‘조선 중화사상’이 있었어요. 그러면서 진경산수화와 풍속도 같은 것이 나왔던 것이죠. 조선시대의 정체성과 자부심이 있었기 때문에 지금처럼 서구우월주의에 빠지지 않았습니다.”

조선후기, 중국에 대한 ‘사대주의’가 아닌, ‘조선이 문화의 중심이다’라는 자부심을 가질 수 있었던 데는 그 시대 지식층이었던 ‘선비’들의 역할도 컸다.

정 위원장은 “우암 송시열 선생은 국가의 기본방향을 설정하는 청사진을 그리고, ‘우리의 국력을 키울 수 있는 길은 결국 문화대국으로 가야 한다’고 이미 그 시절에 제시했었다”고 했다. 그러나 “세월이 흐른 지금, 그 시대 선비와 같은 지식인을 찾아볼 수 없다”고 덧붙였다. “지식인들이 굉장히 실천이 부족합니다. 전통시대 국난이 있고 사회가 어지러울 때마다 의병이 일어나고 선비들이 활약했었던 그때를 지금 지식인들이 알아야 해요. 지식인들이 앞서서 움직여야 합니다”

‘실천’을 강조하는 정 위원장은 4·19혁명 때는 여고생으로 시위에 앞장섰고, 서울대 교수이던 1986년에는 군사 정권의 정권 연장 기도에 반대해 교수서명운동을 주도하는 등 현실 참여에도 적극적이었다.

“예전 궁중드라마가 역사를 왜곡해 화가 나서 드라마를 보지 않았다”는 그는 “요즘 ‘이산’처럼, 군왕의 정책을 다룰 정도로 수준이 높아진 것은 90년대말 ‘조선왕조실록’이 국역됐기 때문으로 본다”고 했다.

그러나 “아직 사실에 근거를 둔 역사드라마는 많지 않은 것 같다”며 “앞으로 궁중드라마들도 사실에 근거한 ‘팩션’(팩트(fact)와 픽션(fiction)을 합성한 신조어)으로 가야한다”고 했다.

세계화 열풍이 강하게 불면서 국가고시에서 국사가 없어지고, 수능시험에서도 국사 폐지론이 불거지는 등 “국사교육이 위기를 맞고 있다”고 진단한 정 위원장은 “역사의 대중화를 위해 자료를 수집하고 데이터베이스화해 많은 사람들에게 인터넷으로 보급하고, 한국사능력검정시험(역시) 활성화에 힘을 쏟을 계획”이라고 밝혔다. 정 위원장은 “세계 속의 한국인이 되기 위해서는 내 뿌리를 아는 것이 가장 우선 해야 할 일”이라며 ‘역사알기’에 대해 거듭 강조했다. 박지영
