어류 폐사 등 담수생명체 피해 동반 지적
물의 흐름을 정체시키는 댐이 춘천지역 호수에서 주로 발견되고 있는 무척추 동물인 태형동물의 활발한 증식을 불러왔다는 주장이 나왔다.
강원대 환경연구소 최재석 교수팀은 29일 춘천시의 연구용역을 받아 작성한 ‘민물 태형동물 번성으로 인한 어류 피해조사 및 제어방안’ 중간 보고회에서 “태형동물은 고착해서 생육하기 때문에 흐르는 물에서는 발견되지 않는다”며 이 같이 분석했다.
용역안에 따르면 태형동물의 현존량은 의암호에는 5,230g/㎡, 춘천호에는 7,920g/㎡, 소양호에는 2,520g/㎡로 청평호를 제외한 모든 호수에 광범위하게 서식하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
또 수면에서 수심 3m까지 집중적으로 서식하고 있었으며 수심 6m이하에서는 발견되지 않았다.
특히 독성의 경우 최고용량(20ℓ/㎖)에서 50%의 세포독성이 관찰되는 등 상당히 유해한 것으로 드러났다.
연구팀은 태형동물 군체가 확산되며 어류 폐사 등 담수생명체의 피해가 동반되고 어류 산란율도 감소될 수 있다고 지적했다.
최재석 연구교수는 “태형동물이 어류 서식처를 잠식하면서 어류의 활동을 방해하고 개체군의 크기를 감소시킬 수 있을 것으로 생각한다”며 “태형동물의 서식실태를 알기 위해서는 봄철부터 여름철까지 조사를 실시해야 할 것”이라고 했다.
이어 “태형동물을 제어하기 위한 근본적인 해결책은 북한강 상류에 밀집해 있는 댐의 수를 줄이는 것”이라며 “현실적으로는 댐 측과 상의해 태형동물이 번성하는 시기에 물의 체류 시간을 줄일 수 있는 방안을 고려해 볼 필요가 있다”고 밝혔다. 지환기자 haji@kwnews.co.kr
