택견을 전공하지 않은 여대생이 체육 특기생을 육성하는 대학의 선수들을 물리치고 우승하는 등 승승장구하고 있어 화제다. 진주산업대 회계정보학과 2학년에 재학 중인 박효주(21) 이정희(21)씨가 그 주인공.
이들은 지난 2일 부산구덕체육관에서 열린 ‘제14회 국민생활체육협의회장기 전국 대학-직장 결련택견대회’에서 대학 여자부 우승을 차지했다. 특히 이들은 결승에서 강팀인 용인대를 맞아 승리했다. 택견 전공자를 택견 비전공자가 누른 것인데, 두 사람은 지난해에도 같은 대회에 나란히 출전해 우승을 차지해 2연패를 이루었다.
초등학교와 고등학교를 함께 다닌 이들은 오랜 우정을 쌓아오고 있다. 이들은 고교 2학년 때 정희씨 부친의 권유로 함께 택견에 입문했다. 정희씨가 몸이 허약해 이를 걱정하던 정희씨 아버지는 평소 알고 지내던 정연근 관장(생활체육 경상남도 택견연합회 진주시 본부전수관)에게 부탁해 정희씨와 효주씨를 맡겼던 것.
이정희씨는 “처음에는 호기심으로 시작했지만 지금은 하루라도 택견 수련을 하지 않으면 몸이 근질거려 살 수가 없어요. 부드러운 동작에서 강한 힘을 발산하는 것이 큰 매력입니다. 더군다나 우리 민족의 전통무예를 계승한다는 자부심에 힘든 줄 모릅니다”라고 말했다.
이들은 2004년 전국한마당대회 우승, 경남도택견연합회장기대회 1위, 생활체육한마당축전 우승, 2004년 치우기대회 1위 등 대회가 있을 때마다 출전해 기량을 올리며 실전경험을 쌓았다.
택견대회에 출전하면서 생기게 된 에피소드도 많다. 지난해 서울에서 개최된 대회에 나갔다가 결승전에서 공교롭게도 효주씨와 정희씨는 만나게 됐다. 4년 동안 함께 수련을 해오면서 상대방의 장단점을 누구보다도 잘 알고 있던 그들이라 승부는 쉽게 나지 않았다. 3분 3회전의 경기는 연장전까지 이어졌고 결국 몸무게 측정으로 조금 가벼운(?) 이정희씨가 승리하게 됐다.
효주씨는 “너무나 상대방을 잘 알았기 때문에 공격과 수비가 소용이 없었지요. 연장전까지 갔지만 결국 승부를 내지 못해 무승부로 끝난 줄 알았는데 몸무게로 승패가 갈리니 억울하다는 생각보다는 부끄러움이 앞서더군요"라고 말했다.
