[쿠키 사회]기름유출 사고를 겪은 태안의 해양 생태계가 사고 이전의 다양한 생물종을 완전히 회복하려면 앞으로 20년이 걸릴 것이라는 전망이 나왔다.
환경부는 외국 사례와 문헌조사를 통해 원유가 덮었던 염습지, 간석지, 암석해안, 모래해변 및 염하구 등 생태계 유형별로 회복에 필요한 기간을 추정한 결과 10년이 지나면 염습지를 제외한 대부분 생태계가 회복되고, 생물종 대부분이 다시 출현하는 것으로 나타났다고 18일 밝혔다.
단기적으로 앞으로 약 3년간은 기름으로 오염된 환경에 강한 갯지렁이들의 세상이 될 것으로 전망됐다. 환경부에 따르면 사고직후 1년간은 유류 오염에 따른 햇빛 차단의 영향으로 식물 광합성이 방해를 받는 탓에 소형 저서동물이 먹이원의 소멸로 사라진다. 저서동물은 암반, 펄 등의 표면 또는 내부에 서식하는 동물군으로 이동성이 적어 기름오염에 취약하다.
이어 어패류, 부착생물 등이 폐사함에 따라 바위로 이뤄진 조간대와 갯벌로 이뤄진 조하대가 모두 파괴된다. 이와 함께 원유에 함유되거나 그것에서 나오는 PAH(다환방향족탄화수소) 등 독성물질이 먹이사슬의 각 영양단계별 동물의 몸 안에 차례로 농축되는 과정(생체농축)을 거쳐 큰 동물, 즉 조류에까지 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다.
사고 직후 수주에서 수개월안에는 기름 유출사고의 영향이 비교적 적은 플랑크톤류가 점진적으로 회복되고, 1년 후부터는 저서동물 가운데 유류오염 환경의 개척종인 가시버들갯지렁이가 서식하기 시작한다.
국립생물자원관의 강재신 연구사는 “오염된 환경에 가장 편안하게 적응하는 종들부터 나타나 갯지렁이류가 한동안 우점종을 차지한뒤 먹이사슬의 단계가 어느 정도 갖춰져야 다양한 생물군이 출현할 것”이라고 말했다. 사고 3년후에는 해조류가 회복되며 사고 5년후부터 조개류가 뚜렷이 회복될 것으로 전망됐다.
한편 환경부는 해양수산부와 함께 조사팀을 구성해 원유 유출사고가 발생한 태안 일대의 오염지역 생태계에 대한 긴급조사에 곧 착수할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 환경부는 우선 이달 안에 1차 실태 파악을 마무리한 뒤 내년 한 해 동안 자연자원 정밀조사를 벌일 계획이다.
환경부 이재홍 자연보전국장은 “유류사고 발생 후 통상 5년이 지나면 모래해변이나 암석해안 등은 대체로 회복이 되지만 간석지나 염습지는 20년이 되도록 회복이 안되는 곳이 있을 정도여서 보통 20년은 지나야 생태계가 온전히 복구될 수 있다”고 말했다. 국민일보 쿠키뉴스 임항 전문기자 hnglim@kmib.co.kr
