(두장옌 < 쓰촨성 > AFP=연합뉴스) 건축된 지 2천년도 더 된 중국 고대의 관개수로가 쓰촨(四川)성 대지진의 충격에도 별다른 피해를 입지 않아 놀라움을 던져주고 있다.

지진 피해에 고스란히 노출됐던 쓰촨성 두장옌(都江堰)시 이름의 기원이기도 한 고대 관개수로 두장옌이 바로 그 곳.

주로 대나무로 만들어진 두장옌은 인근의 콘크리트댐이 붕괴 위험 경고를 받으며 24시간 감독하에 놓인 상황 속에서도 미미한 피해만을 입은 채 건재함을 과시, 지역 사람들의 감탄을 자아냈다.

두장옌은 전국시대인 기원전 256년 촉(蜀)의 태수이자 천문지리에 능통했던 이빙(李氷)이 아들 이이랑(李二郞)과 함께 물살이 빠른 민강(岷江)의 물줄기를 바꿔 토사가 흘러드는 것을 막고 수량을 조절하기 위해 축조한 관개수로와 둑을 말한다.

세 개의 수리시설인 어취(魚嘴)와 비사언(飛沙堰), 보병구(寶甁口)로 나뉘는 이 곳은 2천200여년 전의 것이라고는 믿기지 않을 만큼 과학적인 시스템을 자랑하며 오늘날에도 5천여㎢의 토지에 용수를 공급하고 있다. 2000년에는 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정되기도 했다.

두장옌이 무사할 수 있었던데 대해 지역민인 장솽쥔씨는 "고대 두장옌 건축계획의 완벽함을 보여주는 것"이라며 "더구나 이는 여전히 수로로서의 기능도 완벽히 소화해내고 있다"고 자랑스러워했다.

현대 기술로 만든 댐 붕괴 우려 때문에 지진의 피해를 크게 입은 베이촨(北川)현 내 취산(曲山)은 마을 전체를 옮겨야 하는 상황을 맞았다.

그러나 두장옌 인근에 사는 허취윈(66)씨는 "두장옌은 안정적이고 견고하다"며 태연한 표정을 지었다.
